Locals fondly call it “Aşk-ı Şehir” — the City of Love.** While this affectionate nickname might have once been reserved for Istanbul, Eskişehir has earned its own romantic reputation. With its recent transformation and the deep love its residents feel for their city, this charming destination is quickly becoming the “Little Venice” of Turkey.
Strategically located between Istanbul and Ankara, Eskişehir has held geopolitical importance since the Turkish War of Independence. Today, its role as a hub for high-speed rail travel strengthens its position even further, making it easily accessible for a quick getaway.
In this guide, I’ll walk you through a delightful half-day trip—from the historic streets of Odunpazarı to the magical landscapes of Sazova Science, Culture, and Art Park. If you’re tired of the hustle and bustle of big cities like Istanbul or Ankara, or simply want to spend a refreshing few hours somewhere different, Eskişehir might be just what you need.
Your discovery should begin in Odunpazarı, the heart of old Eskişehir. Locals say that “real Eskişehir natives” traditionally lived in this neighborhood. Interestingly, the uniquely Turkish concept of calling someone a “Manav” (used to describe those with long-standing roots in a region) originated here.
Once a neighborhood of crumbling old houses, Odunpazarı has undergone an incredible restoration. Today, it rivals Safranbolu with its beautifully preserved Ottoman-era mansions.
As you walk deeper into the winding streets, you’ll feel as if time itself is whispering through the walls. Every corner is a nostalgic reminder of forgotten customs and simpler times. You’ll find yourself asking, “Was life always this beautiful back then?”
Odunpazarı’s charm is further enhanced by artistic touches—courtesy of the city’s culturally active mayor. Here, you’ll find the Glass Art Museum and the Wax Museum, two must-visit spots for art lovers. Don’t miss tasting a traditional Turkish gözleme cooked by local women, followed by rich Turkish coffee or a relaxing hookah session in a nearby courtyard.
Just above Odunpazarı lies Şelale Park, which offers panoramic views of the city. But for now, skip the park and head straight to the pulsing core of Eskişehir: Adalar.
This riverside area is full of life and youth. Cafés line both sides of the Porsuk River, where you can enjoy live music and cheerful crowds until late at night. You might even take a gondola ride through the canals—yes, gondolas, just like in Venice!
Spend as much time as you like here, soaking in the vibrant energy. Before moving on, stop by Serdivan Café near the riverbank—perfect for a break and a flavorful nargile.
Eskişehir is a compact city, and getting around is a breeze. It takes less than an hour to cross from one end to the other, and you can reach Sazova Park by a short minibus ride.
Upon arrival, you’re greeted by stunning domes and fantastical architecture. This park is a dream for families, filled with educational fun and child-friendly attractions.
One of the highlights is a giant fairytale castle reminiscent of the Maiden’s Tower and European folklore. There’s also a vast artificial lake where you can enjoy water activities. And that pirate ship in the distance? Yes, it’s real—and you can explore it! Wander the decks, visit the captain’s quarters, and dive into maritime history.
After the ship tour, find a quiet spot and take it all in: the sound of children’s laughter, the breeze through the trees, and the sparkle of clear blue water. It’s serenity and joy in one.
The park is not just about fun—it’s also a hub for art and culture. During my visit, I stumbled upon a live performance, and I learned that the park regularly hosts concerts and events. Just outside the main grounds, you’ll find Eskişehir Aquarium, a great final stop before heading home.
In just half a day, you can experience the rich culture of Odunpazarı, the youthful energy of Adalar, and the family-friendly magic of Sazova Park. Each area offers something completely different—but together, they showcase the beauty and diversity of Eskişehir.
Before leaving, don’t forget to pick up a handcrafted meerschaum souvenir in Odunpazarı, or grab a bite of çiğ börek at Papağan Çiğbörekçisi on Hamamyolu Street.
Easy transportation, short distances, and a warm, welcoming vibe—Eskişehir is waiting for you.
